I learnt something today and that is, it’s challenging to have a ride on a Public Holiday. Initially when I rolled up to our normal starting point, i.e. Ampol, Heathcote, it was chock-a-block full of muscle cars. Apparently three or four hottie car Clubs had organised to use it as the venue for their meeting place – regrettably, they had completely taken over every spot in the service station grounds. As a result, I could only find a parking spot jammed in between two tin-tops.
I had only just squeezed in when Big Al rolled up on his 411 R.E. Himalayan (apparently not enough K’s on his brand new 450 model – shame) Closely followed by Nippy Norm on his Wee Strom and Greg Schaff on his BMW GS. As ground space was at a premium Nippy suggested we resort to using the Caravan Park entrance as the meeting place – great idea. I hung around to check if anyone else was brave enough to venture out on the Double Demerit Points day – no luck, so at 0855 I fought my way out and joined the other three.
Travelled the usual way south, down Mt Keira, the M1 to the Minnamurra turn-off then Swamp Road, Saddle Back and onto the Little Blow Hole, Kiama. The aim of the run was for mornos at Diggies, but when we got to Kiama proper all we encountered were ‘Detour Signs’ which led us to the western exit of Kiama. I made an executive decision to completely by-pass Kiama and head direct to Jamberoo. Forgot to mention, we came across every geriatric no-hoper driver on the way there – so, no chance of coping a ticket to the ‘Police Ball’ – but still very frustrating, we however, persevered on our way with bulldog like tenacity to Kings Patisserie & Café.
After imbibing, we proceeded to our various domiciles via Albion Park, Marshall Mount and onwards. Must admit that in a mischievous, masochistic and sadistic way I thoroughly enjoyed the day – heaps of thanks to the other three of the fantastic, fabulous foursomes for their company and extreme forbearance and tolerance.
